Move movies off your ReplayTV box and burn them to DVD.

I will argue till the day I die that ReplayTV is better than TiVo, and on tonight's "Screen Savers" I have yet another reason: Out of the box, a ReplayTV unit will beg you to plug it into your home network. Every unit has an Ethernet jack for guide and system updates. Just grab any standard Ethernet cable and plug ReplayTV into your router to turn your PC into a second ReplayTV unit. You'll be able to control your ReplayTV unit(s) from your PC, schedule backups, put movies back on your ReplayTV, and more. Tonight, that "and more" means we'll burn some movies and shows to DVD!

Transfer shows to the PC
  1. If you haven't already, record some stuff on your ReplayTV unit.
  2. Download and install DVArchive.
  3. Configure DVArchive and copy over the shows you want to burn to DVD.

Prep the MPEG
Follow the detailed instructions on the next page to clean and prep your video for burning using reVue. If you experience audio-synch problems using reVue, read our guide to breaking the video into chunks and reassembling them.

Burn it to DVD
Once you prep the MPG, burn it to DVD using any DVD-burning application you like. Some programs will try to re-encode the file, so I recommend using Ulead DVD MovieFactory. You won't need to follow any special steps, and it has a trial version. Configure the chapters, menus, graphics, and any other option any way you like.

This is just one of many ways to burn ReplayTV files to DVD. Go to these other must-see sites for further ReplayTV help.

DVD burning: Yet another reason ReplayTV is better than TiVo. (Yes, I know you can do this with TiVo, but it's just not this easy.) Please email me with any other tips and tricks you find: joshua@techtv.com.
