| B-movie mogul Lloyd Kaufman isn’t just a maker of monster movies like The Toxic Avenger and Class of Nuke 'Em High; no, his Troma Entertainment company produces “movies of the future.”
“We don’t we make bad movies – we make Troma movies,” he corrected Kevin P. “’Troma’ is from the ancient Latin, meaning ‘excellence on celluloid.’” In fact, after 30 years of churning out bizarre, oozing films, Troma is now a brand name with an array of different products. Kaufman has written his own guidebook to filmmaking, Make Your Own Damn Movie!, as well as a five-DVD version that he promises to be a “film school in a box.” “You’ll learn every thing about everything!” he crowed. “Troma has more wisdom than the Bible.” Troma has also started its own independent film festival, TromaDance, which occurs every January in the small Utah town of Park City. Unlike certain other “indie” film festivals, TromaDance does not charge filmmakers to submit their movies and it doesn’t charge for tickets. “TromaDance was inspired by Trey Parker,” Kaufman said. “He had submitted Cannibal the Musical to Sundance and never even got an F.U. letter.” So he and Kaufman started their own. Next up on the Troma production schedule is Poultrygeist – which Kaufman said will be starring “chicken zombies.” Can the world possibly wait? | Cesar in Miami asked Lloyd Kaufman what was on his mind when he created Toxic Avenger.
“We were trying to go into a new path,” Kaufman said. “Combining horror, sex, action. And Preston Sturges’ Sullivan’s Travels was a big influence.” Jake in Jupiter, Florida wondered how Kaufman got into filmmaking. “I made the mistake of going to Yale University,” said Kaufman. “I was going to change the world, do good things… but, unfortunately, I was roomed with some movie nuts.” And the rest is cinema history. |
